Float-fishing for trout on the Hiwassee River at Reliance, TNSummer's high water flows are back on the Hiwassee River at nearby Reliance, TN. That shuts down the wading opportunities early, but opens up miles of float-fishing for the river's abundant rainbows and brown trout. Top action currently comes in the afternoons, with 30-fish days a real possibility.

Fly-fishing for wild trout in the upper Toccoa River watershed. There may be no better fly-fishing trip to make in Fannin County than a trek onto the wild trout sreams in the upper Toccoa River watershed. Late-spring dry-fly fishing on June 1 and June 3 racked up wild rainbows and browns in the 7 to 13-inch class.

Four trips over the last week on the Hiwassee River at nearby Reliance, TN, is proving the substance of this scenic tailwater fishery. We've not landed any whoppers, but the number of rainbows in the 10- to 13-inch class has been remarkable. Thirty-fish days is not uncommon, and one pair of our anglers landed more than 60 trout on a full-day float trip.

Water temperature ranges from 53 at the top to 59 at the bottom of the 7-mile stretch from the powerhouse to the Reliance train trestle. Dry-fly action has been best after 3 pm, while streamers, nymphs, spoons, spinnners and small crankbaits provide the best fishing after the powerhouse comes online at 10 am daily.

The Hiwassee is "friendly" to both fly- and spin-tackle fishermen in the Blue Ridge area who may have no finer summertime trout fishery to enjoy than this one on Tennessee's first state-designated scenic river.
