Hiwassee River at Reliance,TN ... Trout fishing is generally strong, with the "numbers game " in place whether you fly fish or fish with spinning tackle.

But keep an eye on the stripers, which are providing late-day action in the lower 3 miles upstream from the Reliance train trestle. I've managed two -- 10.4 and 13.1 pounds -- and a couple other guides have wrestled in fish to almost 40 pounds. This is a hit-or-miss seasonal fishery that takes experience to locate the fish. Large plugs, jigs and trout as bait gets the bites.

Made a late-season Coopers Creek crawl on July 25. Feared the worst, and water temperature was 69 degrees in the remote area I fished, but I managed 7 rainbows and 3 browns to hand, all of 'em taken on size 12 Stimulator.
That's my summertime "go-to" fly, but the high water termperature tells me summer has taken its toll on this fancy creek.

I won't be back on it until October, then ... It will be all about frisky brown trout!

Horseshoe Bend, 4 individuals. I was throwing everything I had at them. Stanley was nymphing with an indicator and caught one tiny 5- to 6-incher. Don't know what Mike or Jan were throwing. I even tried dry-flying in that pool to the right of the fishtrap which is usually productive for me. They showed no interest that day.

The Hiwassee River at nearby Reliance,TN, keeps on giving up good days of fishing for stocker rainbows (8-12 inches) We have managed to scare up a few brook trout too! TWRA must have found a small cache of the pretty trout in a hatchery somewhere.

In any case, the best fishing these dys takes place with spinning tackle. Fly-fishing turns some strikes and is best with a Bugger followed with a brown soft hackle or a Pheasant Tail nymph. A few might take a large brown drake on the surface, but more caught are caught on a dropper fly than with either the big dry or the Bugger. The advantage with spin-tackle lures is the "noise" (vibrations) emitted from the spinners, spoons and small crankbaits we toss ... and it's a great trip for kids! Two anglers in a day take from 12 to 20 fish. Water temp is 65 degrees at the powerhouse.
